Mathematical Physics
Jan Rosseel · Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb
Work by Strominger et al. has recently unveiled connections between three seemingly disparate topics, namely asymptotic symmetries, soft theorems in quantum field theory and memory effects. In this talk, I will give a pedagogical introduction to these developments. I will explain the notions of soft theorems and memory effects in the context of electromagnetism and I will explain how they can be viewed as manifestations of asymptotic symmetries, i.e., large gauge transformations that have physical effects. If time permits, I will comment on what asymptotic symmetries might teach us about potential holographic formulations of gravitational scattering in asymptotically flat spacetimes.

High-Energy Physics
Stephen J. Parke · Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia
I will discuss the mathematics and methods for diagonalizing small, but larger than 2x2 matrices, and discuss the recently rediscovered Eigenvector-Eigenvalue identity. As an explicit, pragmatic example I will use the propagation of neutrinos propagating through matter which is inherently a 3x3 problem. The talk will include material from: 1907.02534, 1908.03795, 2212.12565, appendix of 2511.04735.
About the Series
The Supek Physics Colloquium is a seminar series of the Division of Theoretical Physics at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, named in honour of Ivan Supek (1915–2007), theoretical physicist, humanist, and one of the institute's founders. It brings together researchers from across theoretical physics: high-energy physics, solid-state physics, mathematical physics, cosmology and beyond, for talks aimed at a broad physics audience.
Talks take place on Wednesdays at 14:00 in the Lecture Theatre, Ivan Supek (1st) wing, with a shared Zoom link for remote attendees. Coffee is served afterward. Visitors from other institutions and students are warmly welcome.
